History of Crystals
By Amy Grimsley
The use of crystals is documented throughout much of history. In ceremonies, battle, healing and farming, crystals have been utilized both for decoration and for the energy believed to be contained within each formation.
Features
The molecular form of a crystal has a uniform geometric structure. Therefore, one type of crystal can be shattered into fragments and each piece will look exactly the same under a microscope (see Reference 1).
Geography
The Egyptians created an involved system of crystal identification. The system matched what they believed to be a crystal's magical ability with a color.
In the Roman Empire, gems were combined with power words to harness the energy the crystals were believed to contain.
Significance
Tourmaline in varying shadesThe ancient assumption was that crystals were created supernaturally, thereby containing supernatural powers. This view held a fundamental place within the religious and daily lives of many Native Americans tribes, the European Druids and even in Christianity.
Fun Fact
A Miami bus station housed a stash of stolen jewels in 1964. The Star of India, a 563-carat sapphire, was among jewels stolen by former surfer Jack Murphy. It was recovered from a locker inside the bus station. |
